Last Sunday, Tally and I organised the first photostarters.com photography event. At first, it was meant as a nice day of photography with just the two of us, but already soon a lot of people were liking the idea of going somewhere together, making pictures, and swapping experiences for a day. At some time we would even have been with six people…but because of the unpredictable weather only the die-hards remained, and at the day itself we were going to the beautiful city of Maastricht with three people. In the early afternoon, unfortunately we had to cope with real Dutch weather, a lot of rain, which had us taking shelter at a nearby café, which served all kinds of delicious coffee, I think a lot worse scenarios are possible . Informed by modern technique, we knew we had to stay inside for about an hour till the weather would clear, and finally we found ourselves in dry weather, that gradually improved during the day, and in the late afternoon the sun came out. Maastricht is a beautiful city and has loads of nice photogenic locations ranging from modern architecture, to historic buildings, to some nature here and there. So, we had plenty to choose from, but most of all it was a great day catching up with friends, snapping pictures, teaching, and learning from each other. Suffice it to say, I think this is an event worth repeating and I’m already looking forward to our next meeting, which we’ll have to plan soon! I’ll keep you posted, and should you be interested to participate in next events please let me know:). Oh, and for photographs you can visit the photostarters site!

Temperatures are well below zero, and everything’s covered with snow, looking beautifully and more important a lot more cheerfully than the normal dreaded rainy winters we so often have.

Some time ago, I bought a digital single-lense reflex camera, a Canon EOS 400D. For a complete beginning photographer like myself, the complexity of the reflex camera overwhelmed me. Unlike others, I did not make a gradual switch from compact to bridge to reflex camera, but plunged into the deep right away. Soon I thought of sharing the results of my struggles with other people interested via some tutorials on this blog. When I told this idea to my colleague Tally, a new idea was born of a website specifically addressing the new single-lense reflex user, with interesting tips, tricks, reviews, and interesting events related to photography. Right after this year’s zoom experience we decided to launch the website with a first photographic report of the event. So head over, if you’re interested to: http://www.photostarters.com. If you’re interested in a more active role on this website, please let us know, we are still looking for some fellow photo-enthousiasts.

Some more photography-related news. As I found out today, again the Worldpress Photo Exhibition is visiting Maastricht this year. It’s again in the Centre Ceramique, as it was the last time I visited in 2006. The exhibition will be there from the 1st till the 23rd of November 2008. What I can tell from the last time I visited, it’s certainly worth visiting if you are in anyway interested in photography; many different pictures all tell a different story, sometimes beautiful, sometimes a scene from a horror movie, still very impressing. I think as a beginning photographer or even an amateur one you can learn a lot by just looking at the work done by the professionals. This year, I think also some photographers from National Geographic Magazine won some prices, and as a great fan of that magazine I will be looking out especially for the photographs they took. If you want to join me in visiting this exhibition, again let me know!

Yesterday Tally, Cyril (my cousin) and I went to visit the zoom experience together, of which I have told you in a previous post. It was held in the jaarbeurshallen in Utrecht, so it was quite some travelling to do. Normally, it takes you about two and a half hours to reach Utrecht from my home town, but yesterday it took us even more… because of some problems with the railways it tooks us five hours to reach Utrecht Luckily, the experience was quite worth the while and we did not travel that much for nothing.

We arrived at Utrecht Central Station at about 14:00 in the afternoon, and after a small snack and some coffee, we headed for the jaarbeurshallen which is only a 5 minutes walk from the station. Already, we saw a lot of people with SLR cameras coming our way, so we knew we must be heading in the right direction. At the entrance, already we found a lot of people gathered around a pretty model and shooting pictures, which almost made us forget that there was a big hall to explore too Anyway, two big halls were reserved for the event and there was quite a lot to explore: some workshops on digital photo editing were held (which we unfortunately all missed), almost all major camera companies were present to try and sell you a camera, and, also a lot of booths/stands had some equipment to sell, like for example rucksacks, drawing tablets (wacom), or offered to print out your photos on a big sheet of paper. Unfortunately, these stand made up the biggest part of the event, and having missed all workshops, we found ourselves wondering what else there was to do.

Luckily, the organisation also thought of more active things to do during the event, so there were a couple of areas reserved for different kinds of photography. There was a sort of half pipe with skaters for action photography, an area with cars and beautiful models for the more aesthetically inclined , a booth with a home studio set up and a model to try this out, and some barely dressed babes for the horny bastards (and yes I have some pics of them too ). However, the most beautiful performance was held near the sony stand; three ballerina’s were dancing there, which was already a nice opportunity to shoot some beautiful pictures, but at a specific moment in time one of the women was pulled up to about 3/4 meters height and performed a sort of dance in the air. I think some of my most beautiful pictures have been shot there, see below for a picture.

Next to this performance, the most challenging thing to photograph correctly were the skaters. I did not expect that at all. I thought action photography would be the most dull form of photography available, pick you correct shutter speed, and snap some pics, nothing more I thought. How could I’ve been more wrong, timing was very important and how often did we fail to get the result we wanted. It’s all about anticipation, and with such a big amount of bad pictures, the times when one did come out as we wanted led to all the more satisfaction. At a certain time, you get the hang of it, and then it becomes a lot of fun, experimenting a lot too. Sufficive to say we spent a lot of time at that booth.

While the zoom experience was a lot of fun, after three hours we had seen most of the things there were to see, and decided it was time to go for dinner and the journey back to our beloved Limburg after that. Although there was a lot to see and a lot to learn at the event, I feel, there still could have been a little more action and less commerce. Maybe, we missed a lot in the morning with the portrait photography courses and the workshops, but still some things could have been done a bit better. One thing that really annoyed me were the fellow photographers that always wanted to get the better place just in front of you, a keeping that occupied for a long time; instead of allowing each other to snap at least a couple of photographs so we could all enjoy the event together. Another thing that was a bit weird for a photography event is that the lighting conditions were very bad for photography. In most cases, you needed either a flash or you had a very bright spotlight on your photograph. Maybe they could organise something to prevent these things from happening in the future. So let me know if you want to join me next year . But well, it is something to expect when going to such a big event and I must say that for a first time the event was already quite appealing.
